Baby food should be strained and pureed as they are being newly introduced to solid foods. Baby purees are usually targeted for babies between the age of 4 to 8 months old. Good baby puree ingredients are those that are easily digested by their tiny tummies and lowest on the allergy scale. Nutritious ingredients such as butternut squash, carrots and sweet potatoes are good ingredients to start with.
Here are some of the yummy recipes babies love!
1. Butternut squash puree
Babies love butternut squash (adults too!) due to its sweetness. Butternut squash can be roasted before being pureed in a food processor or baby-food maker instead of a blender to create a thicker, yummier puree.
2. Sweet pea puree
Sweet pea puree is also easy to make for babies. Just defrost the frozen peas and then drain off all the water. Blend the peas with 1 to 2 tablespoons of water to create the puree. Keep blending to get the desired consistency and add water if needed.
3. Apple puree
To make sweet apple puree for the little one, use Gala, Honeycrisp or any sweet apples. Cut the apple into chunks and simmer it in 2 inches of water. Steam the apple for about 12 to 15 minutes until tender. After letting the chunks cool, blend the chunks until it reaches the desired consistency.
4. Add protein to the puree
To introduce more flavours to your baby, add pureed chicken, salmon or beans to the apple puree. The baby will also get all the protein goodness.
5. Savoury beef and broccoli
This dish will provide protein and fibres for your child and the recipe yields two cups. Add a steak to the beef broth, making sure the steak is covered fully by the broth. Place broccoli florets on top of the steak, they don’t need to be submerged in the broth.
Cover the pan, reduce the heat to simmer it for 15 minutes (until meat is cooked and broccoli is tender). Once it’s cooled, blend it. Add water, breast milk or formula to blend the puree smoothly. To thicken it, stir in baby cereal.
6. Yummy broccoli, cheese and potato nuggets
Even the adults may want to take a nibble out of the nuggets! To make it, mix potato puree, broccoli puree, cheese, egg, 3 tablespoons of panko, garlic powder and salt. The remaining panko can be set aside in a shallow dish.
Shape the mixture into tiny balls and flatten to form nugget pieces. Dip the nuggets in panko and pat off excess. Cook the nuggets for 3 to 4 minutes on a pan until golden brown.
