Kids like to do what the adults are doing and that includes brushing their own teeth. If your child is not excited about brushing his or her own teeth, do not worry because there are ways to get them interested.
Here are some ways to make brushing teeth a fun routine!
1. Let the child pick the supplies
Build anticipation by taking your child to the store and let them choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. For parents, the colours of the toothbrush may not make a difference but the image of their favourite characters or toothbrush colour will excite them and make them look forward to brushing teeth time.
2. Lower your expectations
The kids are still learning to master their grip and hold of many things including the toothbrush. This also means they are not going to reach every crevice and cleaning the gum lines yet so parents have to be patient.
If you’re really worried their teeth aren’t clean enough, let them brush themselves in the morning while you help them brush their teeth at night. This way, they’ll get a reminder of your technique to practice in the morning.
3. Brush your teeth together
Children love group activities especially if it’s with their mum and dad! To make the activity fun, brush your teeth at the same time with your kids. A sneaky way to make sure they are truly cleaning their teeth is to have a competition ‘who brushed every tooth?’
4. Get a fun toothbrush holder
Another way to make brushing teeth fun is to get them fun toothbrush holders. These holders can be bought from the shops or you can even DIY a dinosaur toothbrush holder for kids who love dinosaurs.
5. Hire Elmo
If all else fails, let the kids watch Elmo and his celebrity friends brush their teeth too! Elmo has a few videos on brushing teeth and they can be found on Youtube.
