Recently, a father made waves online for his efforts to calm his daughter down! Lawyer Marc Daniels was in attendance for his 2-year-old daughter, Isabella’s concert recital. However, upon appearing onstage with the other kids, his daughter broke down and cried on the floor.
At first, he tried to comfort her from the floor. When that didn’t work, he climbed on stage, took her hand and started following the steps the teacher was doing. Best of all, he did it all with another baby in his arms!
This calmed Isabella and she completed the dance together with her dad. Daniels’ quick reaction was hailed as a masterclass in supportive parenting.
“I just wanted to make sure my daughter was calm and comfortable,” he said.
Here’s why many tagged it #ParentingGoals:
1. He tried a couple of different ways to calm her down
By encouraging her off-stage, it gives her the chance to calm herself on her own. This lets her know that she has the ability to help herself and prevents the habit of depending on parents all the time. He only stepped up to help her directly when efforts to let her calm herself on her own didn’t work.
2. He led by example and was not embarrassed
By dancing with her on stage although he didn’t know the routine completely, he showed her how to focus on the fun side of things instead of the anxiety. The dad actually danced with two of his daughters on stage! He has three girls.
3. He showed he had confidence in her
Most parents would take the child off-stage to calm them down and it’s not a wrong move either. However, by staying on stage with her, he showed that he knew she could do it. It is a powerful message and not one that can be easily shown under pressure.
4. He’s all hands-on
When someone offered to hold his baby girl, Suri, he said “Nah, I’ve got this” and continued dancing.
Isabella and her sisters are lucky to have a supportive dad! More parents can try using these strategies and understand the reasons behind them to calm their kids down 🙂
