Men don’t realize some of the double standards in society until some of them become parents themselves. This happened to Chris Mau when he was out with his family.
His 8-month-old daughter started to throw a fuss and that’s when they discovered she needed a diaper change. The family quickly made their way to a fast food restaurant nearby. Chris decided to change his daughter’s soiled diapers while his fiancee watched their other kids in the restaurant playground.
He went in the men’s toilet assuming there would be a changing table like the female bathroom. After all, men can be dads too!
Unfortunately, he found no changing table but only the dirty floor. With his daughter getting crankier and uncomfortable, his only option was to lay the emergency towel he had to layer up the floor before changing her diapers.
“I was immediately frustrated with the ignorance of the facility,” Mau said in an essay he wrote on Love What Matters.
“With Kali crying I had to make the hard choice between either making her wait until we found a facility that had a changing station, or ease her discomfort and change her in the bathroom anyway.”
“So I grabbed the towel, laid it out and changed her in the stall, all while my mind raced at how unnecessary and preventable this entire situation is.
“I felt like they honestly don’t think a father is responsible for diaper changing or whatnot, and I recalled times in the past where we had traveled and run into similar situations where the public restrooms did not have changing stations resulting in the hassle of trying to change a diaper in the car, on a floor or looking for another place to try, hoping they had one.”
When he shared his experience with his fiancée, she was as livid as he was. He decided to spread the word on Facebook so more people would be aware and perhaps call for a change too.
“It’s crazy to imagine, I know, but there are guys who take care of their kids too.”
Even if he could have switched places with his fiancee, it still doesn’t take away the issue at hand. Changing tables should be placed in men’s bathrooms too not only for single dads but for all hands-on dads!
A search online also showed that he’s not the only dad demanding for change and this shows that it is something that should be looked into worldwide.
